Positive content to lift you up
There is no doubt in my mind that when I consume negative content (news, some social media, scary movies etc…) I feel bad and when I fill my time with positive content (uplifting podcasts, good books and funny shows etc…) I feel good.
Now more than ever, we’re inundated with negative content daily. Endless distressing COVID-19 updates as well as upsetting and conflicting opinions are routinely pushed to our news feeds on social media and through our devices. It’s important to stay informed however equally important to balance the types of content we are consuming.
Often times we feel anxious when we hear about distressing events and have empathy for those who are affected. According to psychologists, negative news could aggravate our own personal worries that are not even related to the content of the news story.
On the flip side, studies prove the positive effects content can have on our mental health when it’s uplifting and inspiring. For example, a study found that people who experienced elevation from reading a story about uncommon goodness became more likely to believe that there is good in the world.
How much of your day is spent consuming uplifting and positive content (podcast, good book, meditation or online course)? Is it in balance or could you focus on adding more positive content into your day?
