Thanks for tuning in today! I truly miss being in the salon and helping you ladies and men feel great. For now I hope you took a few tips to keep looking great and most importantly feeling great. Here’s a recap of some of the tips and some links for products that we spoke about.
ROOT TOUCH UP
Call or message your stylist to help you choose a root touch up colour. Your salon may be doing at home touch up kits so enquire about those. I love hearing from my clients and friends asking for help with colour and product selections. I’m always happy to help.
I’ve also been suggesting my clients with grey use sprays or powders. Oribe has a great root cover spray that can be ordered online from Taz hair. It has instant coverage and it smells amazing. After you blow-dry, spray around your hairline and part. Voila no grey!
BLONDE ROOTS
My advice to all of you blondes. Embrace your roots! Every Instagram hair picture my clients show me is rooted. The rooted look is in so embrace your root! If your blonde is feeling yellow or brassy buy a purple treatment. Taz salon sells a great purple treatment by GOLDWELL called colour revive if you’re yellow or brassy choose one of the purple shades. You can also enhance golds, browns even reds with this treatment. You can add back some shine, seal split ends, and tone all in one product. Another fabulous product is Oribe’s bright blonde shampoo and conditioner line. This line has a purple toner in it is as well so as your cleansing and conditioning your removing unwanted brassy tones. The line will leave your hair shiny, less brassy and with that signature Oribe scent.
PRODUCTS
On the topic of products a few of my other favourites right now are the Oribe Glaze for beautiful colour. One thing that I’ve been missing is that fresh from the salon shine partly because it’s so dry at home and because we’re all due for a fresh colour or toner. This product is magic. Wash your hair with the Oribe beautiful colour shampoo and condition with either the conditioner or the mask and then put the glaze on damp hair. use a wide tooth comb to make sure it’s distributed evenly. leave it on for 10 min. When you wash your hair it will look like you’ve had a fresh gloss/toner.
Check out Taz’s website to purchase any of the products we talked about. Use the promo code COLOURMEHAPPY to receive a free root spray with any order of $125.
HAIRCUTS
Now let’s talk hair cuts. A cut is all about tension, elevation and angles. Hair needs to be all wet or all dry for a more even cut. When cutting a straight line make sure the the head is chin to chest. For a better cut try a professional pair of scissors. Sally’s carries these scissors which will be more helpful then kitchen scissors and are not too pricey.
BANGS
Do not pull too tight when cutting but do have tension pull to the centre of your nose with no elevation. Meaning as close to your face as you can. Elevation will create layers. Cut below your fingers. Start long. You can always go shorter.
LONGHAIR
To prolong your previous salon cut, use a product called split end sealer by Oribe. On freshly washed and conditioned hair apply evenly on ends and blow dry in. This product repairs 94% of existing split ends and helps reduce breakage by 64%. Another magic product.
HAIR ACCESSORIES
Instead of picking up those scissors. Try some hair accessories. Hair accessories like headbands and hair scarves have been huge since last year. There are so many fun, stylish suede, silk, pearl, floral head bands and hair scarves that are perfect for the spring and summer season. A head band or head scarf can hide overgrown short cuts, and bangs as well as turn messy buns into something a bit more trendy. Order some on Etsy. You’ll be supporting a small business while keeping fabulous. One of my favourite companies on Etsy is Bardot Bow gallery. She has a great selection of headbands and hair scarves.
MENS CUTS
Now let’s talk men’s and boys cuts. Their hair grows quickly and usually needs a trim after 4 weeks. Thankfully if you mess up it’ll be ready for a touch up in no time. So let me give you a few tips to help you give your husband or son a better hair cut!
Here’s a great clipper set for at home use. It is a clipper and trimmer in one and stores away well as it’s so compact.
The smaller the guard the shorter the hair will be. The bigger the guard the longer the hair will be. start with a longer blade and if you feel it’s not short enough work your way down in size. we can’t go longer but we can always go shorter. Typically for a short men’s cut I use a 1/4 guard moving up to a 1/2 guard and then to a 3/4 guard as I work my way up the head.
Move around the head from the left side to the right side Men’s hair tends to grow out of the head in one direction so find the growth pattern and cut against it. My blade is usually working on an angle pushing up and slightly back as I pull the clipper up I want to rock the blade as I go up the head so this size guard will blend with the next size you are going to use. Also it won’t pull the hair as much. Another tip, move slowly so as not to pull.
I work around the head in a horse shoe shape. Higher at the temples and dropping lower towards the back of the head. as you make your horse shoe shapes around the head make each horse shoe 1 guard longer. I usually tend to do 3 horse shoes with 3 different guards. I work up to the round of the head leaving everything above the round for the next step.
Once the sides are complete wet the top and cut to desired length straight across. Keep a piece of the previously cut section as a guide for your next section. As you move towards the front make sure to pull the hair slightly back to keep the hair longer around the face. Tension and direction is EVERYTHING in a hair cut. Pulling the front back will keep it a little longer which will avoid a bowl cut or blunt front. You can double check your cut by pulling the hair up in the opposite direction to make sure your nice and even.
To blend the side to the top take a piece of the top and a piece of the side. Cut on an angle for the two pieces to meet. You’ll be removing a triangle shape.
Hope some of these tips will help you till you can get back in the salon to see us. We miss you just as much as you miss us.
